Artist Bio and Statement

My artistic journey got it’s start while living in Laguna Beach, California in the 1960's. I was fortunate to know and learn from Fred Rash Sr., an oil and watercolor painter and gallery owner. I painted part time, mostly watercolors, some oils and pastels.

After moving to Elmira, Oregon in 1970, I developed a student-mentor relationship with Jan Zach, Professor of Sculpture at the University of Oregon. I spent time with and helped Jan at his studio there in Elmira. He gave me a new vision and a restlessness. I found a need to create. In 1975 I picked up a copy of Fine Woodworking and found my direction.

I began in earnest my woodworking way of life after moving to Port Orford, Oregon in 1976. I apprenticed with cabinet maker and master woodworker Tracy Hasset, two years later accepting a position at the Wooden Nickel, Tracy’s new Myrtlewood shop. The work was grueling, mundane and repetitious. At times I could have screamed aloud over the boring routine. I stuck it out however, becoming an experienced woodworker. I cut my teeth, so to speak on a most difficult wood to work. In 1980 I left the Wooden Nickel and set up shop at my current location in Port Orford.

I enjoy my craft and after all these years, I still get a rush when a piece is ready for finish. I approach a new design much like a painter or sculptor would approach a new work, except my work is fully functional. I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing my furniture is being used in homes across the country.
